MONTANA FLY FISHING WITH CLASSIC JOURNEY OUTFITTERS OF MISSOULA MONTANA

Montana native, owner and former NFL middle linebacker Joe Cummings guides for famed outfitter Carl Mann Montana fly fishing outfitting company Classic Journey Outfitters. Joe grew up fly fishing the famous Blackfoot River, as well as the Clark Fork, Missouri, and his home waters, the Bitterroot River. Joe believes that sharing the magic while fishing pristine Montana rivers and casting to rising Montana trout is a worthwhile endeavor. The bonds of family and friends are enhanced by Montana fly fishing trips in ways that only rivers and wild trout can create.

We've got the flies, we've got the rods and reels, but most importantly, we've got the right attitude about what we do, and we know where the trout are!

See you on the river...

Montana Deer Hunting Opportunities for 2009
(please note - deadline is March 1st)

We guide because the strategy that goes into this game is the best part. We dry fly fish, not because its always the way that will catch the most fish, but because it is the best way to catch them. There are classic and traditional ways that define how we at Classic Journey Outfitters decide to operate in the outdoor world.  I was drawn to the Mule Deer game for another level of the outdoor Chess Match.  I recommend this hunt anyone that wants chase these wily animals on their home turf under the best aspects of the Fair Chase ethic.  We have joined forces with Montana Outfitter Carl Mann (MT Outfitter #122) as guides on his Eastern Montana Mule Deer hunts.

Carl is one of the original outfitters out of Fort Peck with decades of experience in the area. Both Brooks Jessen and Joe Cummings are available to be requested guides on this hunt.

Quality of Hunt - Eastern Montana is Mule Deer central and this outfitter has two of the premier permits in the State of Montana. From the Missouri River Breaks to the open prairies that surround Willow Creek there is access to hundreds of thousands of acres of hunting grounds.  This is the land of the spotting scope and enormous viewsheds.  An average day of hunting will see over a 100 head of deer with 5 - 20 being bucks and of those half are 3 1/2 - 6 1/2 year old 4X4 or better.  You are never really out of deer and the game is more about picking through the herds for the right bucks, rather than just finding a deer.

Mule DeerTypical Day in the Field - We rise early get into position in the dark.  Usually a short drive via 4X4 and a walk into a vantage point. In the mornings the deer are up and on move. We walk from viewpoint fo viewpoint until we locate the right buck. The rest of the morning is spent stalking and closing to a shooting distance. The middle of the day is generally slow as most of the animals are bedded down.  So picking apart juniper flats and faces from a hiding place is the game until the evening move, when the deer are up again and its back to scanning and moving on good bucks. The average shot is taken from 200yds from a bi pod, with some bucks taken under a 100yds and others out to 400.  Generally there are 1 - 4 shooting opportunities a day. This is a walking hunt over moderate terrain with the daily ground covered ranging from 2 to 10 miles of walking.

Camp - The Tent camp for the first two hunts is a nice set up with guests staying in comfortable wall tents.  Northern Lights and coyotes howling over the prairie are highlights. The last three hunts are out of a the historic Fort Peck Hotel.

2008 Success Rates - 36 hunters. 34 bucks harvested.  100% multiple shooting opportunities for all clients.

Rates - $2995 for 5 nights/4 day hunt.  Guaranteed Deer Tags are arranged through the outfitter and are the responsibility of the client.

Booking Deadline - Outfitter sponsored tags are due to state of Montana March 1st.
