May/June - Our full complement of the Big Bug game. Salmonflies come in first in late May and by the end of June we are full of Goldens and Green Drakes.
July - A consistent rising fish game grounded in PMDs and the evening Caddis blitz. Also Goldens will linger late into the month giving a nice big bug option.
August - The best of the best Hopper fishing in the afternoon and great pods of fish on tricos in the morning. On rainy August days we get Hecubas (Fall Green Drakes) which can be some of the most rediculous fishing of the year on the Bitterroot.
September - The most consistent fishing conditions month of the whole year. Late in the month Mahogonies and Blue Wing Olives and in early September you are still playing the Hopper/Trico game.
October - A great trophy fish time of year. However not ideal for beginners, but for an experienced angler an excellent time of year to match your dry fly skills with the brutes. Fish are up on Mahogonies and Blue Wings with more motivation and the pre-spawn brownie bite in the morning is exceptional.
Weather Conditions - May through early September is true summer fishing and is generally nice with most days we are wet wading. By mid September we are back in the waders and by October its cold in the morning, but cool and pleasant in the afternoon. For those anglers that love the Fall Splendor of our foliage turning, then late September and early October is the best.

Its buggy and we have lots of water. This has been one of the most consistent falls I have seen. All our off banks are in perfect shape and the obvious stuff is getting enough bio mass to stay up. So lots of heads on the little flies and still a hearty hopper bite. A few Brownies have moved into pre-spawn mode and it will build up from here as we ease into October.
Bitterroot - 500 cfs at Darby. That is Ice Cream in the whole drainage. Hoppers have been solid. Mahogonies and Baetis in prospecting mode have been paying the bills.
Clark Fork - All the hand wringing about the Dam removal is over. She is roaring back to life with the missing hatches of the last 3 years cranking. I don't know that there is a bad choice on this river right now.
Blackfoot - Not bad, but a little inconsistent. Should be a great streamer bite right now, but we have had to make it go on little flies to get the big ones to eat.
Missouri - Just about ready. Soon it will be the morning rip, rip, and then afternoon sip, sip. When Blue Wings get in over there its just exceptional. A week away from magic.
Tight Lines,
Joe Cummings

Put the bobber rigs away and starting looking for snouts! The Drop is on and Runoff is over. All our Missoula water across the board is falling into premium shape. Dry fly fishing is rolling on the Blackfoot, Upper Bitteroot, and soon to be the evening rise on the Clark Fork. No more shady water clarity and nymph fishing. Push the dry and hold on. This usually happens around 3rd week of June, so it will be a treat this year with all of July having big flows of falling water. Our trout have been treading in heavy water, so they'll be dumb and hungry when they can finally relax and feed.
Rock Creek - First 8 casts on Friday were a fish, and the carnage ensued. Goldens, Salmonflies, Caddis, Sallies, BUG SOUP and awesome. Floating ends tommorrow, if you missed it sign up early for next year.
Bitterroot - Upper River is great on dries and middle is coming into shape. Water clarity is excellent and the whole system should puke hatches by the 4th.
Blackfoot - Salmonflies and Goldens are the treats on top and turd dropper has been the ticket underneath. Yes a "Turd", its a funky little stonefly nymph pattern they have ben hankering for lately.
Clark Fork - Almost time to start sneaking around at dark. Rumors of the Caddis blitz starting have the night owls floating late and smiling at the empty boat ramps.
Missouri - Nymphing is better than great, but dries have been restricted to the evenings. When they turn off the dam volume it is going to be a dry fly fiesta.

The BUG is in. The orange monster of the insect world is on the willows and we all know what that means. It is still big water and I strongly recommend you don't head out in a boat unless you are very experienced on the oars. Book a guide - its worth the safe ride, plus you get to whack some trout and eat a great lunch.
June 6, 2008 - Missoula MT Fly Fishing Report
It has been fishing big water across the board. This bodes extremely well for the July and August swing. Traditionally those times of year are the most stable and reliable summer months. It is only in the last few years with low snowpack and heat that they had become tricky. This is the year to come back to the cold water and extended chop lines to push fat hoppers in the mid and late summer.
What is happening RIGHT now - There is some excellent fishing, but it is pretty much from a boat. DO NOT VENTURE ON ANY OF THE MISSOULA WATER UNLESS YOU ARE A SKILLED EXPERIENCED OARSMAN.
Rock Creek - Fishing exceptional underneath in front of the Salmonfly hatch. Salmon flies are in, but sporadic at the moment, will improve. Yellow Streamers have been the ticket tight to the bank.
Missouri – Big and weird. If you don’t have a guide, FORGET IT. An experienced guide will have you going home with one of the best fly fishing days in your life. 10,000 cfs at the Dam makes the side channels and swirlies happy, happy, happy.
Clark Fork - Way up top is good, Down low is very bad. Hatches are around, but still a streamer game.
Bitterroot – West and East fork are fishing, main stem not ready yet, but close. Watch your log book for flow markers. This one is going to come in before anyone thinks it will. Its not clarity, its flow and temp right now.
Blackfoot - A long way to go and is curently a muck hole. Pass.

Because life is too short......
First of all, we love our job. We love the outdoors, and we love sharing Montana and it's timeless rivers to others. If you've never come to the Big Sky Country, you're missing something. Classic Journey Outfitters takes your Montana fly fishing vacation time very seriously and our number one goal is a satisfied Montana Fly Fishing Smile at the end of the day. It can come from a single trout up on rhythm on the Bitterroot River that you and your fly fishing guide quietly stalk. It has also appeared on faces from a quick shot with a bright orange size four stimulator into a churning back eddy on the Blackfoot River and watch as a native cutthroat trout comes from six feet down to inhale the fly, or massive pods of trout up on piles of tricos that fell in the late morning on the Missouri River. Montana Fly Fishing Smiles can come from the late fall colors of the Clark Fork River and Mahoganies and Blue Wing Olives filling the riffles and back eddies. But most likely your Montana smile will be rooted in the quiet time spent on our waters and amidst our mountains with your angling companions. Long after you've made a Montana Fly Fishing Trip with Joe Cummings and the guides of Classic Journey Outfitters, that Montana Smile will appear, as you think back warmly to that special day on the river in Montana. Once you get it, it never leaves. Our lead guide Brooks Jessen is living proof of that!
"I think often about the great day you showed me on the Bitterroot; with lot's of good fish, a slam, trying really hard to catch a difficult fish, two fish with one cast, watching a fish take forever to slowly take the hopper, catching what may be the biggest fish I ever get and a fish on the last cast of the day. All of this in a beautiful setting with good company and patient tutoring and encouragement. If I get the chance I'll be back. Cheers!" --Frank Ryan, Australia
